Kawagoe has many unagi (eel) shops that has been around for nearly 200 years since the Edo period.
There is no sea in this area, so the eels are taken from the surrounding river, which is a popular and important protein source of the townspeople.

■ Ichinoya
This long-established restaurant was opened in 1832 (Edo period).
The style of the shop has an Edo period feeling.
Besides the meal, another thing you can enjoy is the shop’s atmosphere with its antiquities and garden.
They use a secret sauce that has been passed down for generations to coat the eel with,
which is then grilled until the thick meat is soft and delicious.

■ Ogakiku
Ogakiku is one of the old-fashioned shops in Kawagoe that was built in 1807 (Edo period).
They carefully protect their secret sauce that has been passed down for over 200 years.
The current owner is the seventh generation shopkeeper.
In addition, the shop is one of the few wooden three-story buildings in the city and it is designated as Kawagoe City’s “Important Buildings of Urban Landscapes”.
